Second Chance Apartment Project
The Second Chance Apartment Project creates affordable transitional housing through partnership with the YWCA of Madison and sponsoring organizations. A sponsor, most often a church or synagogue, assists a homeless family to reach stability by renting an apartment for them and providing mentors trained by IHN. Participating families are selected from the IHN and YWCA shelters and receive intensive services from the agencies for two years.A Second Chance Apartment Story
Kimayana and her children Kyale and Kyana entered the Second Chance Apartment Project after staying in shelter for two months at the YWCA, IHN's partner in this program. She had enrolled in W-2 during her shelter stay and upon moving into her new home began working with her mentors and her case manager to reach her education and employment goals.Kim enrolled in the YWCA Employment Annex's Certified Nursing Program, completing her training in August of 2004. She found work right away in a nursing facility. She then began to work on improving her finances by developing and following a budget, and by making payments on past debts. Meanwhile, Kyale and Kyana made advancements at school, enjoying the stability of consistent education and friends, and improving their reading and other skills. Both children advanced so much that they became ineligible for summer school for the first time. They also enjoyed close and supportive relationships with the family's mentors.
Because of all this hard work and the resulting credit and housing history improvements, Kim, Kyale and Kyana were accepted into permanent, affordable housing in August. Kimayana's younger daughter Keyana, who lives with her grandparents in Chicago, stays with the family in their new home during summers and holidays. Following graduation from the program, Kimayana was hired as a weekend van driver at IHN.
