Housing Stabilization
Families who successfully move from shelter into housing may elect to continue working with The Road Home for up to a year. A case manager works with each family to develop and work toward goals, to address budgeting and credit repair issues, to maintain a positive relationship with the landlord and to seek additional skills and resources. Families also receive practical assistance such as transportation to appointments, bus tickets, personal hygiene items and household goods.
A Housing Stablization Story
Nicole worked hard in IHN's Shelter Network to secure income and housing. She participated in the W-2 program and was accepted for a three-bedroom townhouse in a subsidized complex. At last, Nicole and her three children had stability and their own space to live and grow.In order to receive continued support and case management, Nicole decided to continue to work with The Road Home in the Housing Stabilization Program. After settling into her new home, Nicole worked with her case manager on an employment search. Nicole had experience working as a school bus driver in another state and hoped to continue working in this area. After taking the necessary steps to obtain her CDL license in Wisconsin, Nicole was hired as a transportation specialist for people with disabilities. The gift of a donated van gave Nicole reliable transportation to get to and from work. She found quality, stable child care for her younger two children and her oldest child began Kindergarten. Nicole was also able to access much-needed dental care through The Road Home's volunteer dentist.
Nicole is still working hard at her job and juggling the demands of single motherhood with much skill and grace. Because of Nicole's demonstrated reliabilityand responsibility she was invited to join the TRH Board of Directors this year and has become an active member of the board.
